A word in reference to that previous message.
Everything that will be described here, and every custom it refers to, has solid practical reasons behind it. But it is not a rule.
Some people are fine with having shirts and suits that are similar. Some think they look good in a black shirt and a black suit. I disagree, but that’s just my opinion. I would argue that it is always worth knowing why customs exist. If your shirt and suit do not contrast you lose the slimming, broadening effect it can have. Which is fine, if you don’t want that. But every custom is there for a reason. Take the time to know why people call them rules.
Hopefully, this blog will help men understand some of the guidelines, rules or customs a little better. They often don’t realise why customs exist, and either follow them slavishly or ignore them out of a faint sense of rebellion. It’s far more interesting to investigate and then create. It’s easier and more fun.
This is my philosophy.

Apologies if this has been answered in later posts. I am working my way through them but it is taking time and this seems like the most logical post to ask my question.
I have recently decided to smarten up my appearance both in and out of work and am a little lost as to how to start. I’m 30, have an office job and until recently have been slobbing around work in ‘smart’ jeans, scruffy walking shoes and M&S shirts and at home in jeans, t shirts and the same shoes. I’ve never taken a real interested in my appearance but I’m changing that now. I bought some proper trousers for work (M&S again) and this weekend I bought some shoes; Cheaneys brogues I think, for about £100. This was the most I have spent on shoes….ever, by a long way.
My question is how can I smarten up my general appearance both in and out of work? I’m looking for small changes at first, things like good colour combinations, where to get a decent shirt and so on. Too much change could be a fatal shock to the system!
Thanks
Chris.
Hi Chris,
It sounds like you are doing the right thing – reading through all my past blogs! There is a lot of info there, but for such a wide query I would recommend going through it all. Also, watch out in particular for the most recent two, on office casual. Oh, and the one on Casual and Formal Wear are CLoser than you think.
Tell me if you want any more specific blog suggestions.
Simon
Thanks Simon I’ll have a close read of those posts.
In terms of specific advice the first thing I would ask is as follows:
I want to move on from wearing M&S/Next shirts that don’t fit me properly. Would my next step be to go straight to a tailor? How much can I expend to spend and do I need to know what kind of material and colour or pattern I want? (because I’m currently clueless in these areas).
I would probably also ask the same of trousers.
Thanks
Chris.
Hi Westie,
This is an interesting topic. Rather than write a limited response here, I think I’ll post something more detailed on the site later in the week. I hope that’s ok. Keep your eyes pealed!
